The Spirit of Elijah

“After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.” 1Kings 19:12

S. Ernest Chan gave a presentation on “The Spirit of Elijah”. He expounded on Elijah’s life as a prophet of God from his calling, to his challenge against the false prophets on Mount Carmel, the raising of a widow’s dead son, to his ascension in a chariot of fire. (Elijah along with Enoch never experienced death.) S. Ernest explained that Elijah was a passionate man. But he was also human. He despaired on the threat of his life by Queen Jezebel when Elijah slaughtered the prophets of Baal. Elijah was unafraid before the Baal prophets, but he was very afraid before this woman. Her spirit was fearsome. So Elijah ran away. As we saw from a map, he ran 120 miles to Beersheba. We learned that after a great victory, Satan is ready to attack. When we experience victory, Satan is like a lion that pounces on its prey. As Elijah was in a time of crisis, we need a good and faithful friend in a time of despair and discouragement. So God visited him to restore him in body and spirit. God demonstrated his almighty power by sending a powerful wind to shatter the mountains, but God was not in the wind. God demonstrates his other power. But God revealed himself as a whisper. God is spirit, and was in Elijah’s heart. God speaks to us in a gentle voice, not in a powerful wind. God’s spirit is a gentle voice that speaks in our hearts. God could heal Elijah’s spirit and had changed Elijah’s life direction from a man of action to that of a disciple maker. God promised a reserve 7000 men as his remnant. So Elijah was then sent out to call Elisha as his successor.

S. Ernest learned and was moved by Elijah’s absolute obedience and uncompromising spirit. S. Sylvia Foisy sang a special song “O Divine Redeemer” with a divine voice and gave her testimony.
